Materials Needed

Each group will need:
  • Corn Earworm eggs/larvae*
  • plastic cups with lids*
  • diet for the larvae*
  • 1 paintbrush
  • 1 triple beam balance / scale
  • 1 dissecting microscope or hand lens
  • 1 thermometer
  • worksheets
  • 1 fine tip permanent marker
  • 1 flashlight
  • 1 to 2 large jars (2-liter soda bottles work well)
  • tweezers (soft)
  • dentist wicks (cotton)
  • moth diet (mix one part sugar to nine parts of distilled water)
  • paper towels
  • rubber bands
  • 4 masks
  • graph paper

Other useful materials if available:

  • camera for documenting steps, differences in specimens, or any special occurrences in the process
  • black light to view the ultraviolet colors that the flowers use to attract and guide the moths, and to view the variance in pigmentation in the eyes
