Evaluation

Each student will be evaluated on the following:

  • daily notes
  • the successful completion of the Hypothesis/Conclusion worksheet
  • completion of daily tasks as set and monitored by the group on the Duty Schedule worksheet
  • completion of the Specimen Development Charts
  • knowledge gained by doing the activity - form of a written quiz

Extension

This activity can be extended at several points in the cycle depending on availability of materials, student and teacher interest, and time. Some of the factors that can be modified are:

  • putting a dye on the larvae once they hatch to study molting rates, how many times they molt, growth sizes and rates
  • varying the types of food given to the larvae
  • varying the temperature while in the pupa stage to note any differences in emergence rates
  • changing the light intensity to study the moth eye adaptations. Note any color changes
  • putting flowers under black light and noting the color patterns and watching how they use them to attract the moths
  • trying different flowers
  • placing male and female moths in the same jar and beginning the whole cycle over again
